¿Por qué armar una subasta?

Para ConTextos el 2021 no fue cualquier año, primero, porque volvíamos a la oficina, volvíamos a vernos a la cara y a escuchar las risas un poco más cerca; y segundo porque cumplíamos -cumplimos- 10 años. Y como 10 no es un número más, desde febrero empezamos a planear cómo íbamos a celebrarlo. Y pensamos en grande: libro, video, eventos, mapping en el centro histórico, redes sociales explotadas, bibliotecas, subasta de arte. 

Una subasta. De arte.

Eso nos emocionó muchísimo, y si hay algo que no falta en ConTextos es la emoción. Cualquier idea se transforma inmediatamente en una escalada de propuestas. 

Gloria Raskosky y Blanca Iris Mejía llevaron adelante este proyecto. Gloria es nuestra directora país y Blanca Iris es responsable de Desarrollo Institucional y Recaudación de Fondos. Juntas son imparables.

La subasta se empezó a planificar en marzo. 

Primero, fue la reunión con los y las artistas, café y pan dulce de por medio, y aunque la mayoría conoce ConTextos, quizás, no la conocen tan en detalle, así que presentamos lo que hacemos: el trabajo con docentes, con privados y privadas de libertad, las bibliotecas, los libros. 

La reunión fue reconfortante. Ahí estaban los grandes y los nuevos grandes nombres del arte salvadoreño: Ronald Morán, Walterio Iraheta, Carmen Elena Trigueros, Carlos Párraga, Abigail Reyes y más diciendo que sí, que participaban y dando ideas para que ConTextos llegara a todas las escuelas del país. 

Sí, reconfortante es la palabra.

Como estábamos y estamos en pandemia, y vamos y venimos, la subasta pasó de ser presencial a virtual, de durar un día a durar 10 y de ser local a ser internacional. 

16 artistas nos dijeron que sí y en mayo empezamos a darle forma.

Armar una plataforma de subasta en línea

 es una tarea sumamente difícil y hacerlo vía zoom es agotador; la cantidad de detalles a tener en cuenta son cientos: envío, pago, manual de uso, navegabilidad, permisos. Ya no se habla más de pintura y perspectiva y fotos sino de códigos, transacciones y seguridad informática. 

Blanca Iris aprendió a hablar así y le dio un seguimiento que se le notaba a la mañana en los ojos. “Ayer soñé con la plataforma”, dijo un día después de dejar el bolso en su escritorio. Ni nos miró, miraba el vacío.

Lucas Arévalo, gestor cultural, se sumó voluntariamente al proyecto. Pasó horas sentado detrás de la computadora hablando con los y las artistas, coordinando tiempos de entrega, corrigiendo textos, validando y comienzo pizza sin levantar la vista del teclado. Colaboró hasta que el último cuadro estuvo colgado en la oficina de ConTextos. 

La subasta se llama Artistas x Historias, es benéfica y virtual. Las obras son preciosas: conectan con todo el trabajo que hacemos y lo que hacemos es realidad pura salvadoreña. 

Hay una pintura de un niño leyendo en una hamaca apoyando sus pies en el lomo de un perro aguacatero. Está inspirada en una foto tomada hace años, y la verdad es que quisiéramos tener más fotos como esa: niñez leyendo en cualquier lado.

Un estudio demuestra que la lectura y la escritura influyen en la prevención de violencia, ya que a menores niveles de comprensión lectora las personas pueden presentar más propensión a desarrollar conductas agresivas.

Por eso queremos que se lea, por eso Artistas x Historias, por eso Blanca Iris soñando con una plataforma y Lucas colgando cuadros y Gloria optimista y agradecida como solo ella sabe estar.

Why set up an auction?

For ConTextos, 2021 was not just any year, first, because we were back in the office, we were back to see each other’s faces and hear the laughter a little closer; and second, because we were -we were turning 10 years old!.  And since 10 is not just another number, we started planning in February how we were going to celebrate it. And we thought big: a book, videos, events, mapping in the Historical Center, exploding social networks, libraries… an art auction.

An auction. An Art Auction.

That made us very excited, and if there is something that is never lacking in ConTextos, it is excitement. Any idea is immediately transformed into an escalation of proposals.

Gloria Raskosky and Blanca Iris Mejía led this project. Gloria is our country director and Blanca Iris is responsible for Institutional Development and Fundraising. Together they are unstoppable.

“Work sisters”, as Gloria said.

Auction planning began in March. 

First, there was the meeting with the artists, coffee and sweet bread in between, and although most of them know ConTextos, perhaps they don’t know it in detail, so we presented what we do: the work with teachers, with prisoners, the libraries, the books.

The meeting was reassuring. There were the great and new great names of Salvadoran art: Ronald Morán, Walterio Iraheta, Carmen Elena Trigueros, Carlos Párraga, Abigail Reyes and more saying yes, they were participating and giving ideas for ConTextos to reach all the schools in the country.

Yes, reassuring is the word.

As we were and are in a pandemic, and we come and go, the auction went from being virtual, to in person and back to virtual, from lasting one day to 10, and from being local to being international. 

16 artists said yes and in May we started to shape it..

Setting up an online auction platform is an extremely difficult task and doing it via zoom is exhausting; there are hundreds of details to take into account: shipping, payment, user manual, navigability, permissions. No more talk about paintings, art, perspective and photos but of codes, transactions and computer security. 

Blanca Iris learned to speak this language and gave it a following that you could see in her eyes every morning. “Yesterday I dreamed about the platform,” she said one day after having left her bag on the desk. She didn’t even look at us, she was staring into the void.

Lucas Arévalo, a cultural manager, volunteered to join the project. He spent hours sitting behind the computer talking to the artists, coordinating deadlines, correcting texts, validating and eating pizza without looking up from the keyboard. He collaborated until the last painting was hanging in the ConTextos office.

The auction is called “Artistas x Historias” “Artists for Stories”, it is charitable and it is virtual. The works are beautiful: they connect with all the work we do which is pure Salvadoran reality. 

There is a painting of a boy reading in a hammock resting his feet on the back of an avocado dog. It is inspired by a photo taken years ago, and the truth is that we would like to have more photos like that one: childhood reading anywhere.

A study shows that reading and writing have an influence on violence prevention, since lower levels of reading comprehension may make people more likely to develop aggressive behavior.

That’s why we want it to be read, that’s why Artists x Stories, that’s why Blanca Iris dreaming of a platform and Lucas hanging paintings and Gloria optimistic and grateful as only she knows how to be.
